Aarø: Green and Lush – with Tasty Island Steaks and Local Beer and Wine
Aarø is one of those islands that people often just sail past on their way through the Lillebælt. But it’s a lovely island, so it’s a good idea to make a stop.
There’s plenty of life in the well-sheltered harbor, which has space for about 90 visiting boats. The ferry to Aarøsund runs frequently. Enjoy the authentic maritime atmosphere with charming fishing houses – a nearly vanished sight in Danish harbors.
At the harbor, you’ll find the harbor kiosk offering easy meals, including pan-fried fish. Don’t forget to order fresh bread for the morning. Both the kiosk and the campsite sell groceries.
Island-Fresh Delicacies
In the fields, black Galloway cattle graze – exquisite beef cattle. The meat is available locally at the island’s eateries and farm shops – along with many other island products.
The “Bulladen,” a traditional building style, is located at Brummers Gård. It’s a piece of cultural heritage dating back to the 1600s.
Aarø Gaard has a café where you can taste island specialties. A unique feature is the local quality wine served at Aarø Vineyard – where you can also take a guided tour and attend a wine talk. Local beer is brewed at Aarø Bryg, where you can also enjoy a tasting – perhaps with tapas?
Out and About
Put on your hiking boots or hop on a bike – the island invites you to take long walks along the beach and on roads and trails. Enjoy the fresh nature with fine beaches and coastal meadows with grazing cows and abundant birdlife. You can find a brochure with the island’s trails at the harbor office.
A particularly exciting trip goes out to Sandodden on the eastern part of the island. Here lies the Aarø Kalv Bird Reserve (no access from March 1 to July 15). Aarø Lighthouse stands right by the harbor – a beautiful structure built in 1905. Aarø Christmas Church is also worth a visit.
Especially for Children
The harbor also has its own playground. Behind the playground, you’ll find a beach with a shelter.
The island also has a large nature playground, a brisk walk from the harbor, right across from Aarø Vineyard. In the forest by the playground, there are trails inviting a “jungle tour” – where you might spot wild animals. The island’s park golf course also offers fun for both children and adults.
