Because of its wide-open, impressive landscapes, the unique nature of Svanninge Bakker, with its many plateaus covered by grasslands (a specific biotope which is declining throughout Europe), has often been a dream subject for artists to paint – especially “The Funish Painters” whose works can be experienced at Faaborg Museum.
These grasslands have typically served as grazing areas, which has helped to reduce the growth and allowing the bio-diversity of plants and animals to be vast. In Svanninge Bakker, a project is underway in which the natural landscape is restored, for example by felling trees and thus recreating the grasslands, allowing a lot of different species of plants and animals to thrive in the area once again.
