Sønderborg Harbour

About the harbor

Welcome to Sønderborg Harbour, a modern harbour in the heart of Sønderborg.

The town of Sønderborg is divided by the Als Sound and as such sits both on the mainland and on the island of Als, connected by the King Christian X’s Bridge. Sønderborg Harbour sits on both sides of the bridge on Als, which is why the harbour is divided into the North Harbour and the South Harbour.

The South Harbour

The South Harbour stretches from King Christian X’s Bridge to Sønderborg Castle. As a recreational sailor in Sønderborg South Harbour, you will be berthed along the charming waterfront with views of Sønderborg Castle and Dybbøl Mill, among other things. The harbour is a popular spot and is always bustling with activity during the summer months, where the harbour gets up to 100 visiting sailors every day. There are local restaurants and cafés along the quay. The street is closed to motorised traffic, making it a charming equivalent to Copenhagen’s famous “Nyhavn”.

The North Harbour

Following years of construction work on the waterfront, The North Harbour is now open for business. The harbour stretches from King Christian X’s Bridge and past the Hotel Alsik. Along the beautiful new waterfront, there are numerous alongside berths, around which the Multicultural Centre, Hotel Alsik and Olafur Eliasson’s artwork ‘Time Circles’ have been built. A new playground has been built next to the Multicultural Centre. There are several restaurants and cafés along the North Harbour, such as Torvehallen, as well as at the Hotel Alsik and Café Kjukken in the Multicultural Centre.

Sønderborg Harbour Bath is definitely worth a visit all year round. During the summer months (1 June – 31 August), the Harbour Bath is open every day from 10 am to 6 pm, with lifeguards on duty during opening hours. Entry is free of charge, and you can enjoy a 25-metre pool, a children’s pool and a diving pool. There are brand-new changing facilities on the water, for use when you visit the harbour bath.

During the colder months (1 September – 31 May), the facility is open to winter swimmers. During this time, the sauna is also available during opening hours (admission fee applies).

Provisioning

The nearest supermarket is only 500 meters from the harbour. On the pedestrian street, you will find a bakery and a host of stores offering a wide range of shopping, as well as the Borgen shopping centre.

At the harbour, you will find the specialty store Ap Arte Sailware, which sells sailing clothing.

Local sights

The harbour is located in the town centre, with plenty of attractions and activities nearby. As an annual summer tradition, a festival of riding at the ring is held in every town in South Jutland, with the biggest of these festivals taking place in Sønderborg in early July.

Another long-standing tradition is the Rum Regatta, where 50–75 magnificent historic vessels gather in Sønderborg Harbour on Ascension Day, before setting sail the following day along the Flensburg Fjord to Flensburg. A beautiful sight and a definite must-see! Learn more

In addition, some of Sønderborg’s major historical attractions, such as Sønderborg Castle and History Centre Dybbøl Banke, are within walking or cycling distance. If you take a stroll along the harbour promenade, you will also find the local Blue Flag beach, Fluepapiret. Go on a culinary adventure and sample South Jutland’s specialities and local produce at local shops and cafés. If you love the outdoors, Als is surrounded by coastline and has several child-friendly Blue Flag beaches. Sønderskoven forest is within cycling distance of the harbour, and on Als you will also find Denmark’s longest coastal forest, Nørreskoven Forest.

Kids on board – activities for the whole family

The Sønderborg area offers a host of child-friendly attractions. These include the Universe Science Park, an interactive science park on North Als, which offers science and technology-based experiences and activities. Also popular is History Centre Dybbøl Banke, an interactive museum for children and adults where you get to be a part of history.

Pack your swimwear and head to Nordborg to take a dip in Northern Europe’s largest tropical water park, Canter Parcs Nordborg Resort. Here you will find, among other things, thrilling water slides, the Wild Water River and a number of other fun activities. Learn more
