The eco-village Økosamfundet Dyssekilde

The village covers a total of 14 hectares, of which half is set out for buildings and half for organic farming. The majority of the village is, not surprisingly, a car-free zone.

Five enthusiasts created the idea of an eco-friendly society based on a philosophy of social interaction, tolerance, respect and sustainability. Where earlier was only a potato field, now 200 people live – Some in traditional town houses, others in experimental houses built from recyclable materials. The sustainable systems in the village include sewage treatment, waste sorting, solar cells and collectors and vegetable farming. Communal eating is also an important element of the village, which is divided into six housing groups, each with their own practical responsibilities and social activities: Bifrost, Dysager, Højager, Månen, Solpletten and Yggdrasil.

Every year, the village is visited by thousands of Danish and foreign visitors who want to see the beautiful houses and experience life in the eco-community. You can get a guided tour of Dyssekilde, if you want to experience the village with a knowledgeable guide who can tell you about the construction and heating of the houses and the amazing idea behind the village. This will give you a unique look into life in a 100% eco-friendly village. You are also welcome to visit the village on your own and walk around on the gravel roads imagining how your own life would be in an eco-friendly, sustainable village like this.

On your way around the village, take a moment to visit some of the artists living there or the health food store Taraxacum, named for the scientific name of the dandelion, where you can purchase organic and biodynamic products. Café Torup offers food made completely from scratch and using 85% organic products.

During summer, in the third week of July, Torup hosts a Movement Festival where you can try different activities from all over the world, including dancing, singing, yoga Qi Gong and much more. Social interaction is key during the festival.

The Himmelstorm Festival at the end of July describes itself as ”the world’s nicest eco-hippie festival”. Come visit and get a chance to listen to wonderful music in a green oasis among artistic and social installations, organic food and beer – and a quite unique, intimate and magical atmosphere close to nature.
