Bicycle route on Tunø

Cycling in the East Jutland Archipelago

The small, cosy holiday island of Tunø has a very special charm. The island is compact enough to explore on foot, but taking a gentle bike ride along its peaceful, traffic-free roads is highly recommended. As cars are not permitted on the Tunø Ferry, the island is effectively car-free. However, you might encounter a few tractors and quirky homemade vehicles along the way. The absence of traffic noise, combined with an idyllic setting of half-timbered houses and beautiful scenery, makes exploring Tunø by bike particularly inviting.

What you will see along the way

There is no official signposted cycling route on Tunø, but a network of charming country lanes – both gravel and tarmac – awaits. A good place to start your tour is the small but lively harbour, the island’s central hub. Around the ferry and marina, you will find excellent facilities, a smokehouse with outdoor seating, and several cosy corners where you can relax in the summer sun. Just beyond the harbour lies the village, full of character with its eateries, activities and a grocery shop. The village has many distinctive island features – including the unique church and lighthouse in one building and the traditional roadside milk platforms.

Further inland, you will pass both woodland and open farmland. On the western side of the island, you will find Tunø’s small airstrip. The cycling route shown on the map is 11 kilometres long.

If you have the time and energy, you can also enjoy a coastal walk around the island. This route follows the high cliffs and offers stunning sea views in many places. The walk includes a treasure hunt designed for families with children. By combining the 8-kilometre coastal hike with a cycle ride through the island’s interior, you can easily experience all of Tunø in one day.

Bike hire

At Tunø Harbour, just a short walk from the ferry landing, you can hire a bike to explore the island. Tunø Bike Rental offers bikes for both adults and children, as well as bikes with trailers. Rental is available at a modest daily rate. You cannot miss the bike hire shop – it is on your left-hand side as you walk from the ferry towards the main street of the village.
