Gyldensteen Strand: From Archipelago to Farmland – and Back to Nature

Gyldensteen Strand is Funen's largest nature restoration project and a fascinating journey through time. This 616-hectare area has lived a turbulent life: until 1871, it was a shallow archipelago with numerous small islands.

Following a massive reclamation project, the seabed was transformed into grazing pastures and later into intensive farmland.

In 2011, the "Aage V. Jensen Nature Foundation" purchased the area to give it back to nature. In 2014, the great transformation began as the dikes were removed, allowing the water to flow back in.

Today, the old farmland has been replaced by a 210-hectare coastal lagoon, a 144-hectare freshwater lake, and reed beds – a paradise for birds, animals, and people alike.

Nature, Tranquility, and Wide Open Spaces

The area offers plenty of room for everything – from brisk walks and birdwatching to those moments when you just want to enjoy the silence:

• Wild Animals and Birds: It is not unusual to see white-tailed eagles soaring over the lagoon or spot seals resting on the stones in the water.
• Views over the Reserve: Three different bird towers provide an overview of the vast landscape and views reaching all the way to the sea.
• Access for Everyone: The wide and flat paths make it possible for both wheelchair users and families with strollers to explore most of the area. Two of the towers are also equipped with disabled access.
• Curiosity at Eye Level: At the "Naturrum" (Nature Room), you can borrow equipment for free to investigate insects and aquatic life, making nature come alive for all ages.

Practical Info (Plan Your Trip)

• Picnic with a View: Enjoy your packed lunch in the large, covered Nature Room, which features plenty of tables and benches.
• When to visit: You are welcome on the paths from 6:00 AM until sunset.
• Directions: Set your GPS to Langø 1, 5400 Bogense. This is where the large parking lot is located.
• Note: Entry is only possible via Gyldensteensvej/Langø. The area is surrounded by private fields where access is not permitted.

FAQ about Gyldensteen Strand

Where am I allowed to walk?

Please always stay on the marked paths. Gyldensteen Strand is surrounded by private fields and land where access is not allowed. Please respect the signage to protect the wildlife and our neighbors.

Can I get from Stegø Mølle to Gyldensteen Strand?

Yes, easily. Follow the path along the canal (before you reach Stegø Mølle). From there, you can walk or cycle along the "Ålebækengen" meadow and continue to Gyldensteensvej and Langø.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, your dog is welcome but must always be kept on a leash to protect the abundant birdlife and grazing animals.

Can I stay overnight at Gyldensteen Strand?

No, staying overnight is not permitted. The area is only open from 6:00 AM until sunset.

Are there toilets nearby?

Yes, toilet facilities are located at the Nature Room near the parking lot.

Is cycling allowed on the paths?

Yes, the wide paths are well-suited for both walking and cycling around the flat terrain.
