Jørsby Kirke – a medieval brick church on Mors with rare details
Small, low and entirely its own – Jørsby Kirke holds a story that sets it apart.
Here you'll encounter a medieval church by the Limfjord where brick, Gothic traces and Romanesque features come together in a distinctive and almost hidden experience.
A unique brick church in the heart of Mors
Jørsby Kirke is the only medieval brick church on Mors. It was built in the 15th century but breaks with the classic Gothic church layout by having a chancel arch and a narrow chancel as in a Romanesque church.
Today the north side still stands untouched with its original masonry of small red and yellow monk bricks laid in monk bond – a beautiful and rare glimpse of the church's original appearance.
Discover the details – from saint figures to a Gothic window
Inside the church are two remarkable woodcarvings: St Michael and the Dragon from around 1250, and a figure of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child from around 1500.
The altarpiece from 1866, executed by Chr. Dalsgaard from Sorø, adds a later artistic dimension to the space.
The church also has the only surviving Gothic window on Mors – a rare detail that brings both light and historical depth to the interior.
Why you should experience Jørsby Kirke
Jørsby Kirke is ideal for those seeking unique experiences by the Limfjord and wishing to visit a church that stands apart from the rest.
Here Gothic and Romanesque styles meet in a rare combination, and the small details make the visit feel particularly close and personal.
A visit pairs well with other experiences on Mors, where nature, fjord and cultural history are closely interwoven.
