For more than 1000 years, Denmark has been a transit country for pilgrims going on pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain from Norway and Sweden. In keeping with tradition, pilgrimage routes are marked by tiny shells or yellow arrows on either red posts or road signs, and this is true of the North Zealand route as well, ensuring that today’s pilgrims can also find their way. The route has been marked through a collaboration between the abbey Esrum Kloster, the municipality Gribskov Kommune, VisitNorthSealand and a local task force.

The North Zealand section of the Camino is known as the Santiago route and runs from Helsingør through Hillerød to Roskilde. If you want to continue on the Danish Camino route, you can continue all the way to Gedser in the southern part of Falster.

Along the way, as you journey towards Roskilde by the Santiago route, you will experience historical churches, old streets, beautiful castles, impressive nature and important cultural history. All of these contribute to making the pilgrimage a unique physical, mental and spiritual journey that lets you find your innermost self.
