The bicycle route around Horsens Fjord
Enjoy a scenic bicycle experience on the coast
Embark on this 52-kilometre cycle tour through an ever-changing landscape. Along the way, you will encounter forests, beaches, rolling fields, idyllic villages, cosy marinas, panoramic viewpoints, charming islands, and the vibrant city of Horsens with its many opportunities and attractions. The variety and contrasts along the route make this ride truly special. And if 52 kilometres feels like a bit too much, you can easily opt for shorter round trips along selected sections of the route.
Can you really cycle around a fjord?
By definition, a fjord might seem like a barrier to cyclists. But thanks to two delightful islands and a couple of ferries, it becomes entirely possible. Alrø is connected to the mainland via a causeway at the northern end of the fjord. From the southern tip of Alrø, you can hop on the small bicycle ferry that sails to the neighbouring island of Hjarnø during the summer season. From Hjarnø, you can then take the Hjarnø Ferry to Snaptun on the southern shore of the fjord.
Explore the fjord islands
Alrø is a cosy and inviting island known for its excellent eateries. There are three to choose from, including Café Alrø with its famously oversized patty shells, and Alrø Købmandsgård, where you can sample tasty bison meat from the island’s own bison farm.
The official route only includes a brief stop at the harbour on Hjarnø, but we highly recommend taking a ride around the island to enjoy its unique island atmosphere and rich natural surroundings.
The north side of the fjord
The city of Horsens lies at the end of the fjord, featuring a newly developed and welcoming harbour area. Along the route, you will pass the marina and the popular city beach at Langelinie, bustling with life in good weather, as well as its quieter neighbour, Strandparken. In the Stensballe district, you will cycle along a scenic panoramic path overlooking the fjord, before reaching the Blue Flag-certified Husodde Beach. From there, the route continues through the woodlands of Stensballe and further east into hilly farmland, offering splendid views for much of the journey.
Around the village of Sondrup, you will experience beaches, plantations, forests, and steep terrain with several outstanding viewpoints – including Trustup Hills and multiple hilltops in Sondrup Hills, one of the region’s most beautiful woodland areas.
The south side of the fjord
On the southern side of the fjord, the route passes through rural coastal landscapes and the villages of Glud and Sejet. In Glud, you can visit the Glud Museum – an open-air museum where 350 years of Danish village life come to life. The agricultural theme continues at Denmark’s Ferguson Museum, home to the world’s largest collection of Ferguson tractors.
Further west lies historic Boller Castle, with its elegant public park. The castle is surrounded by Boller Forest, which the route winds through. From Boller Pier, you are treated to splendid views across the fjord towards Horsens. This pier also marks the starting point of the Planet Trail, connecting Boller to Horsens.
