Our Lady's Church in the Market Town of Assens
The beautiful town church, Our Lady's Church in Assens, is Funen’s second-largest church after Odense Cathedral, and it was completed in its current form in 1488. Explore this peaceful oasis in the heart of the city, where you can immerse yourself in Assens’ rich cultural heritage. Our Lady's Church is a must-see during your visit to Assens.
Funen's second-largest church
The church’s octagonal tower, at 48 meters high, is the only one of its kind in Denmark, besides the five towers of Kalundborg Church.
The building style is Gothic, but the Holevad Chapel on the church’s north side, along with the square base of the tower (dating from 1285), are remnants of a Romanesque church.
The simple and bright interior of the church houses interesting works of art, including a marble angel by J.A. Jerichau and a large painting by the renowned Assens-born artist Dankwart Dreyer, who donated the painting to the church in 1842.
