Teglgårdsparken

Until 1911, Teglgårdsparken was known as "The Asylum at Middelfart"

In 1884, the government decided to build a psychiatric hospital in Middelfart. It was to be placed at a proper distance from the town – close to nature, forest, and water. Away from the bustle of the market town, patients found calm in the natural surroundings.

The buildings were constructed in 1888 by building inspector Vilhelm Valdemar Pedersen. The main building housed the administration, chapel, assembly hall, and the chief physician's residence. Patient wings extended on either side – one for men, one for women. Later, additional buildings were added, including a tuberculosis ward.

In the 1950s, up to 1,250 patients lived here. By the 1970s, numbers declined and patients were gradually moved to newer facilities. The psychiatric hospital closed permanently in 1999.

Today, the buildings are home to residences, institutions, businesses – and not least MIND Museum, which explores the human mind from past to present. The architecture is unchanged on the outside. Inside, the spaces have been transformed. The park stretches across wide lawns shaded by old trees, and behind MIND Museum you'll find the sensory garden.
